Abstract

Pediatric colorectal disorders are a varied group of problems that can present prenatally into adulthood. Hirschsprung’s disease can present in many ways depending on age at presentation and potentially has long-lasting considerations for bowel health. Constipation is a common pediatric complaint and ubiquitous in many pediatric disease processes. The workup and treatment varies depending on the underlying disease process. Constipation and fecal incontinence are a consideration in the pediatric patient for antegrade enemas via Malone or Chait as an alternative to colostomy to achieve fecal continence. Pediatric anorectal disease is a common problem in infants and children, just as in adults. However, the management approach does have some unique differences especially in the approach to surgery. Lastly, transitional care of the pediatric patient to the adult providers requires discussion and planning to reduce recidivism and improve care of this vulnerable patient population.
