Abstract

There are circumstances when the use of an educated and authorized proxy may be in the best interest of the patient. Denying this may deny some patients the best possible pain control, with faster access to bolus doses and pain relief. Clearly defined policies/procedures, preventing unauthorized use of the PCA device, being mindful of potential adverse reactions, and thorough education of staff and designated proxy can minimize adverse events.
