Abstract
This chapter reviews some of the basic physical properties of solutions and the factors that govern the movement of water between the intravascular space and the brain. The rationale for maintaining normovolemia is followed by a description of the various intravenous solutions that are best suited for use in patients at risk for intracranial hypertension, and the possible advantages of using hypertonic saline solutions. The goal of this review is to provide the practitioner with a sound scientific basis for the selection and administration of fluids to patients with an elevated ICP.
