Abstract
The potential for microbial manganese(II) binding and oxidation, and manganese(IV) dissolution, in the chemocline of the Black Sea was determined during leg 3 of the US-Turkey Black Sea Expedition in June 1988. A strong potential for both microbial Mn(II) oxidation and microbial Mn(IV) reduction was measured by radioactive incubation experiments and enrichment culture techniques, throughout the suboxic zone. Both Mn(II) oxidation and Mn(IV) reduction can occur simultaneously in the presence of oxygen. -from Authors
