Abstract
This article includes a brief review of the basic anatomic and physiologic mechanisms that are operational in the maintenance of urinary control. Emphasis is directed toward the anatomic changes that are associated with urinary incontinence and the appropriate method of surgical treatment. The discussion also focusses on current myths concerning the surgical treatment of stress incontinence.
