Abstract

Children with neurodevelopmental disabilities (NDD) are at significant risk for sleep disturbances that often persist into adolescence and adulthood. Some of the most common sleep problems include bedtime resistance, delayed sleep onset, and sleep-maintenance problems. In this article, unique aspects of sleep disturbance within this population are presented, including description of sleep disturbances, prevalence, etiology, and treatment. Emphasis is on children with intellectual disability, Down syndrome, autism spectrum disorder, and other NDD who commonly present with sleep problems.
