Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a complex inflammatory condition due to an altered immune response to host and environmental stimuli. Numerous pathways are involved in the upregulation of cytokines and chemokines that can promote inflammation and clinical disease activity. The effect of sleep and the regulatory effect of normal circadian rhythms on inflammatory homeostasis have been of increased interest in IBD. This chapter will review the complex interrelationship between sleep physiology and IBD, and will highlight the role of sleep as a potential target for clinicians to optimize IBD management.
