Abstract
The field of mental health is currently in a period of accelerated growth due in part to advances in technology and in our understanding of how dysfunction in neural circuitry can contribute to mental health symptoms across the adult life span. Clinical neuroscience, neurobiology, neuroimaging, and genetic techniques have arrived at the forefront of the field, resulting in several remarkable discoveries suggesting transdiagnostic commonalities among psychiatric symptoms in younger and older adults. The current chapter discusses current trends and potential future directions within the field of mental health, and consequently a burgeoning focus in geriatric mental health. The concepts of neurocircuitry-based mental illness, precision psychiatry, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, and the role of technology to improve access to care and monitor cognitive status as applied to older populations are overviewed.
