Abstract

The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a molecular technique that can be used to identify the DNA of infectious agents that are difficult to culture. With care to exclude contamination, PCR identifies Tropheryma, Borrelia, Neisseria, mycobacteria, and viral diseases and may be useful in searching for infectious agents that induce more chronic inflammatory disease.
