Abstract
Fluorescence offers a non-invasive means to assess the structure and status of a tissue. In the clinic, two basic tasks are required: (1) surveillance of large tracts of tissue, best done with video endoscopy in order to efficiently find sites of abnormality, and (2) spectroscopy of local sites, best done with an optical fiber fluorescence spectrometer in order to specifically characterize a tissue site and eliminate false positives. The role of tissue optics in distorting fluorescence measurements is presented.
