The three objectives of this statement are to enhance the understanding of physicians and other health care providers of the issues involved in withholding and withdrawing life support, to promote medically and ethically sound decision making in clinical practice related to withholding and withdrawing life support, and to assist in the development of institutional and public policies related to these issues.
